How can I help?

Heartburn & indigestion

Heartburn, reflux and indigestion are common and painful symptoms associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux.

This occurs when stomach juices are regurgitated from the stomach to the oesophagus.

The stomach’s natural acidity is both an aid to digestion and defence against infection. A small muscle prevents stomach acid from entering the lower oesophagus and higher, and when this muscle fails, we experience a host of painful and unpleasant side effects – namely heartburn, reflux and indigestion.

Treating Heartburn

Medication, including antacids and acid-reducing drugs, is usually given to neutralise acids, but in more severe cases, anti-reflux surgery may be required.

In addition to medical treatments, lifestyle changes can also be highly beneficial. These may include a change in diet, changes in eating habits (for example, avoiding eating late at night and cutting down on caffeine) and cutting down or quitting drinking and smoking.
