Rectal Bleeding

Rectal bleeding may occur as an isolated symptom or it may occur in tandem with changes in bowel habits. Fresh rectal bleeding usually indicates problems related to the ending of the bowel, in the sigmoid colon, anus or rectum, for example.

In most cases, rectal bleeding is associated with piles (haemorrhoids) or a tear (known as anal fissure), however, rectal bleeding is also symptomatic of bowel cancer, diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease and for this reason it should always be investigated with colonoscopy.
